Often called the Edinburgh of New Zealand, Dunedin is one of the most historical locations in the South Island. Dunedin's small-city vibe, picturesque landscape and compelling cultural heritage make it an immensely popular destination for people who like to fill their holidays with art, culture and history.

Otago Museum

The Otago Museum first opened its doors way back in 1868 with a small collection of rocks and minerals. Today it boasts an expansive collection of rare objects and special exhibitions that document the history, geography, natural world and culture of Otago and the South Island. The broad range of items on display makes it an ideal day out for the whole family.

Dunedin's most visited tourist attraction is located on Great King Street and is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

Dunedin Public Art Gallery

Housed in another 19th century building, The Dunedin Public Art Gallery was established in 1884 and is one of New Zealand's four major metropolitan art galleries.

Today, the vast collection includes works from some of the finest European artists; including Monet, Claude Lorraine, Turner, Rosa, Gainsborough, Burne-Jones and Tissot. The gallery also houses a large collection of New Zealand art, some of which dates back to the 1860s.

Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

Toitu Otago Settlers Museum

Located in the heart of the city and at the edge of the Queens Gardens; Toitu Otago Settlers Museum tells the social history of the Dunedin's and the surrounding area. It contains 14 individually themed galleries that cover the character, culture, technology, art, fashion and transport of Dunedin and the Otago area. Interactive displays and cleverly told narratives bring the stories to life.
